What is ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene?

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a new type of engineering thermoplastic with a viscosity-average molecular weight of over 3 million. UHMWPE pipe has very high wear resistance, impact resistance, excellent internal pressure strength, resistance to environmental stress cracking, intrinsic self-lubrication, anti-adhesion, low-temperature resistance and other properties better than conventional HDPE pipe. Excellent chemical resistance.

Role of Molecular Weight

UHMWPE stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, which is a polyethylene polymer with an average molecular weight greater than 3,100,000, as defined by ASTM D4020 - Standard Specification for UHMWPE Polymers. This molecular weight is much higher than the molecular weight of most typical polymers, which is between 1,000,000 and 400,000, earning the UHMWPE designation. Polyethylene with molecular weights in the 3.1 - 4.5 million range has been found to exhibit the best combination of impact strength and abrasion resistance. For polyethylene molecular weight classification, the following guidelines can be used.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): 100,000 - 400,000 MW

HMWHDPE (high molecular weight high-density polyethylene) 500,000 - 1,999,999

VHMWHDPE (ultra-high molecular weight high-density polyethylene) 2,000,000 - 3,100,000

UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) > 3,100,000 + MW

Properties of UHMWPE pipes

Abrasion resistance - UHMWPE pipe has excellent abrasion resistance, providing long service life in abrasive slurry applications.

Chemical resistance - Excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals allows UHMWPE systems to be used in tailings pipelines and chemical handling applications used in mining operations.

Flexibility - UHMWPE pipe can be bent to at least 30 times the outside diameter of HDPE pipe. This flexibility and elasticity allow the pipe to absorb shock stresses, vibrations and stresses caused by soil movement. This makes the pipe particularly suitable for subsea pipelines, mine subsidence and seismic-prone areas.

High flow rates - Low friction and resistance to material deposition buildup give UHMWPE pipe long life and high flow rates compared to materials such as fiber-reinforced cement.

Higher hydraulic capacity and lower pumping costs compared to steel and HDPE pipe.

Easy to install - UHMWPE is easy to install with lightweight and flanged joints.

Applications of UHMWPE pipes

Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) pipes are used in a variety of applications in industries such as mining, water treatment, oil and gas, and chemical processing. The properties of UHMWPE make it an excellent choice for applications that require high strength, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance.

Slurry and abrasive material transport: UHMWPE pipes are used to transport slurry and other abrasive materials in industries such as mining and dredging.

Water treatment: UHMWPE pipes are used in water treatment plants to transport water and chemicals due to their excellent chemical resistance and low friction.

Oil and gas: UHMWPE pipes are used in oil and gas applications, such as the transport of crude oil and natural gas, due to their high abrasion resistance and low friction.

Chemical processing: UHMWPE pipes are used in chemical processing plants due to their resistance to a wide range of chemicals and their ability to withstand high temperatures.

Food and beverage: UHMWPE pipes are used in food and beverage processing plants due to their non-toxic properties and resistance to bacteria and other contaminants.

Advantages of Ultra High Molecular Weight

UHMWPE yields a variety of unique properties due to its extremely high molecular weight, including the highest abrasion resistance and highest impact strength of any plastic. Beware of claiming to be a competitor to UHMWPE, as some UHMWPE processing techniques are not without their attendant drawbacks, as the effective amount of medium molecular weight polyethylene results in a significant reduction in some of the most desirable properties of UHMWPE, such as impact strength and abrasion resistance. The high molecular weight gives UHMW-PE a unique combination of high impact strength, low coefficient of friction and abrasion resistance that is 10 to 1 higher than that of carbon steel, making it more suitable for many applications that lower molecular weight grades cannot meet. uHMWPE pipe can be used in a wide range of mining and industrial slurry applications because of its three primary properties: high impact strength, excellent abrasion resistance and a very low coefficient of friction. Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW) is a tough, abrasion-resistant thermoplastic with a molecular weight greater than 3 million. UHMWPE pipe has a lower coefficient of friction, higher abrasion resistance, and lower wear rates than traditional HDPE pipe such as PE100.

Pressure Rating

The nominal diameter of the UHMWPE pipe is from 65mm to 800mm, and the wall thickness is usually from 8mm to 38mm. the nominal pressure rating of UHMWPE pipe, etc. is from 0.6MPa to 2.0MPa, and UHMWPE composite pipe can reach 6.4MPa.
