Product Description

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a new kind of engineering thermoplastics with more than 3 million viscosity-average molecular weight.

UHMWPE pipe has superior performance such as very high wear resistance, impact resistance, excellent resistance to internal pressure strength, resistance to environmental stress cracking, intrinsically self-lubricating, anti-adhesion, low-temperature resistance and excellent chemical resistance and so on. and it is widely used in metallurgical mines, electrical power, petroleum, natural gas, textiles, paper making, food, chemical industry, machinery, electrical and other industries.

UHMWPE differs from PE standard grades in its very high degree of polymerization. UHMW is more rigid than LDPE and HDPE and has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.

What are the benefits of UHMWPE pipes?

1. High Wear Resistance, longer life expectancy, largely saving pipeline replacement costs

Compare with existing plastic pipes, Wear resistant UHMWPE pipe has the most excellent wear resistance which is 4 to 7 times that of carbon steel pipe and 2.7 times that of wear-resistant steel 16Mn. Therefore it increases the pipe flow rate and improves the transmission efficiency by more than 20%. The working life of UHMWPE pipes is more than 3 times that of wear-resistant steel pipes. Wear-resistant UHMWPE pipe has great advantages to replace traditional metal pipes in discharging abrasive materials.

2. Chemical resistance – outstanding resistance to a wide range of chemical reagents allows the use of UHMWPE systems in tailings pipelines and chemical treatment applications used in mining operations.

3. Flexibility – UHMWPE pipes can be bent to a minimum of 30 times the pipe`s outside diameter for HDPE. This flexibility and resiliency allow the pipe to absorb surge pressures, vibration and stresses caused by soil movement. This makes the pipes particularly useful in submarine pipelines, mine subsidence and earthquake-prone areas.

4. High flow capacity – low friction compared with materials such as fiber-reinforced cement and resistance to material deposit buildup give UHMWPE pipes long-lived high flow capacity.

5. Lower pumping cost due to greater hydraulic capacity as compared with steel and HDPE pipes.

6. Ease of installation – UHMWPE is easy to install with light weights and flanged couplings.

7. The high molecular weight is what gives UHMW-PE a unique combination of high impact strength, low coefficient of friction and abrasion resistance that outwears carbon steel 10 to 1 making it more suitable for many applications where lower molecular weight grades fail.

Applications of UHMWPE pipes:

1. Dredging Industry: sea shore, sand suction, slurry dredge, river channel

2. Mining Industry: mine powder, mine slurry, mine tailing, mine waste rock delivery

3. Sea engineering: sea water desalinization, dredging

4. Water Supply: water pipeline

5. Chemical Industry: corrosive medium with slag delivery in power plant

6. Working as a conveyor rollers system

Comparisons between UHMWPE and other materials

UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) pipe delivers superior performance in extremely abrasive conditions. It has extraordinary wear resistance, providing cost-effective, long-lasting service for a wide range of applications.

UHMWPE is a thermoplastic material that is often described as the world’s toughest polymer. This incredibly durable, abrasion-resistant material offers the highest impact strength of all thermoplastics and is resistant to most chemicals.

UHMWPE pipes offer an excellent combination of durability and performance for demanding transport applications such as wastewater and slurries in mining. It has higher abrasion, impact and chemical resistance than most other plastics and is lightweight and can be easily constructed and installed.

This pipe material is a good choice in places like mine slurries, where steel piping works too well, generating too much friction and slowing down the flow. UHMWPE pipe pumps slurry more quickly and with less wear and tear on machinery. UHMWPE pipes also do exceptionally well in a wide range of temperatures and are not prone to freeze damage or expansion like steel.

Making UHMWPE much stronger than other conventional thermoplastics, UHMWPE pipe is 40 times more wear-resistant than steel pipe, and significantly tougher than other thermoplastics, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) and other plastic pipe materials. At the same time, UHMWPE pipe weighs 50 to 80 percent lighter than steel pipe, reducing labor costs associated with installation.

The molecular weight of the polymer chains in UHMWPE pipe is extremely high, creating a more wear-resistant compound. This also makes UHMWPE a very slippery material, therefore minimizing the abrasive force between the content and the pipe, while often preventing/minimizing clogging and blockage.

As one of the most versatile plastic materials available, UHMWPE pipe can be used in an almost limitless array of applications. This includes everything from hot liquids and steam processing to high-temperature, harsh chemical processing.

In many of these applications, UHMWPE can provide unique advantages over other materials. UHMWPE is highly resistant to fatigue and cyclic loading, highly durable when exposed to chemicals and UHMWPE has a natural lubricity and low-friction coefficient that helps reduce operating costs.

In short, UHMWPE pipe delivers superior performance in demanding abrasive environments compared to other plastic pipes. It offers durability, long-term cost savings, and improved performance in a wide range of applications.

For light- to medium-duty operations, UHMWPE can be a suitable alternative to other plastics such as PVC and CPVC. However, for heavy-duty applications, UHMWPE is a superior option as it has higher abrasion, impact and chemical resistance. UHMWPE pipe has been used in many of these applications with great success and has a well-deserved reputation for delivering cost-effective performance.
