The Difference between HDPE and PE Pipe

HDPE and PE pipes both have similar functions, but they differ in some important ways. Here, we take a look at the differences between HDPE and PE pipe in terms of strength, service life, corrosion resistance, and more.

What is HDPE pipe?

HDPE pipe is a plastic pipe used to transport fluids and gases or to replace aging concrete or steel mains. HDPE pipe (or high-density polyethylene pipe) is flexible, highly impermeable, and suitable for high-pressure pipelines. Most commonly, HDPE pipe is used for water pipes, gas pipes, sewer pipes, slurry lines, rural irrigation, fire protection system supply lines, electric power lines, communication pipes and drainage pipes.

What is PE pipe?

PE pipe (which stands for polyethylene pipe) is a broader term for any thermoplastic pipe made from ethylene gas. PE pipe comes in a variety of styles, including low density, cross-linked, ultra-low molecular weight, high molecular weight, medium density, ultra-high molecular weight, chlorinated, and linear low density.

HDPE pipe vs PE pipe

HDPE is a kind of PE pipe. However, HDPE pipes are more durable than other PE pipes because they have a high melting point and high impact point. HDPE pipes are tough, chemical resistant, corrosion resistant, and light weight.

Is HDPE pipe stronger than PE pipe?

When comparing the strength of HDPE pipe to the strength of PE pipe, it is important to consider the material, thickness, and quality of the particular PE pipe because PE pipe comes in a variety of styles. Generally, HDPE pipe is considered a highly durable pipe, especially when considering connections; HDPE pipe can be joined by butt welding, electrofusion welding, socket welding or extrusion welding. These welds form a uniform joint that is at least as strong as (if not stronger than) existing pipe and does not require rubber seals or joining chemicals. As a result, HDPE pipe lasts longer and is less susceptible to root intrusion.

In addition to its durability, HDPE pipe has low thermal conductivity, which means it can maintain normal operating temperatures despite external factors. Unlike ordinary PE pipe, HDPE pipe is rust-resistant and highly reliable. HDPE pipes maintain initial flow despite prevailing environmental factors and require little maintenance costs to keep them working.

Is HDPE pipe resistant to corrosion?

Unlike other piping systems that corrode over time, HDPE pipe does not rot, rust or corrode. It is resistant to chemicals and biological growth, which means the pipe has a long life and saves on repair and replacement costs.

Does HDPE pipe have a long service life?

Depending on the application, design and installation, HDPE pipe can have a life expectancy of between 50 and 100 years. This makes it one of the longest lasting pipes available.

Does HDPE pipe have leak-free joints?

Unlike other popular piping systems, HDPE pipe can be joined by butt, electrofusion, socket or extrusion welds. These welds form uniform joints that are at least as strong as existing pipes and virtually leak-free.

Does HDPE piping include trenchless installation?

Most PE piping systems must be installed by trenching, which can cause damage to pedestrians, traffic and the environment. HDPE can be installed using open cut methods or using environmentally friendly trenchless technology. This technology can also be used to install HDPE pipe under creeks, rivers, lakes and roads while minimizing damage to the environment.

Is HDPE pipe environmentally friendly?

HDPE pipe has a lower environmental impact than most other types of PE pipe. HDPE is lighter in weight and more cost effective to transport than metal pipe. Fewer fittings are required due to the flexibility of HDPE and the use of hot-fusion joints. Smaller pipes can be used during trenchless installations, resulting in less damage to the ground. HDPE pipe fittings eliminate harmful leaks and HDPE does not emit toxins into the air during production or use. For all these reasons, HDPE is recognized for its minimal impact on the environment.
