HDPE versus other materials
HDPE pipe is more suitable for industrial applications such as electrical, telecommunications, water, sewage, oil and gas than other materials on the market. Alternative materials for industrial piping include PVC, iron, copper and concrete.
PVC pipe is commonly used in sewerage, electrical, water and telecommunication systems. Although both materials are plastics, PVC is stronger and harder than HDPE. PVC has a higher failure rate than HDPE and does not perform well in extreme weather or temperature conditions. Leakage can also be a problem in mechanically connected PVC pipes.
Mainly used in gas, water and sewage applications, iron pipes are robust and can withstand high internal and shock pressures and have a long service life.
Pipes made from copper have a higher corrosion resistance and are more flexible than iron pipes. However, copper pipes are more expensive and less flexible than plastic pipes such as HDPE. Copper pipes are prone to failure when exposed to very high and very low temperatures.
Primarily used for sewage and drainage applications, concrete pipes are rigid and do not corrode. However, concrete pipe is heavy and unsuitable for other applications where HDPE is used. Its weight and stiffness make it less desirable for transport, handling and installation.
